[WITMIT?] Bristol Zoo Admission Prices

February 27, 2011

I went to Bristol Zoo  this weekend. Lots of fun and a chance for a new profile picture!

Anyway, here’s a nice starter activity (pick the one that’s most appropriate for your class’s ability):

The best question to ask* your class is: “What mathematical questions could we ask about this?”

Here are possible suggestions (you may want to show just part of the sign – pics attached):

The zoo prices include a 10% donation so, what is the price if you don’t want to donate the 10%?

The sign lists prices excluding the 10% donation. What would the price be if you want to make the donation?

How many times would you have to go to make the annual subscription pay for itself?**

What percentage discount is a family ticket?**

*In my opinion 🙂

**What difference does it make whether you were going to pay the donation or not?

Had this lovely email from the zoo:Hi David, Thanks for your email. Your Maths resource is really interesting ??? thanks for sharing it with us! I???ll pass on the link to the Education Officers to see if they can find a way to incorporate it onto our online resources or into the numeracy sessions. We???d be delighted for you to share it with other teachers. Please do email us about your idea with the locust exhibit. We are always on the look out for new ideas for interpretation and learning resources for our visitors, not just education groups. Many thanks and best wishes, Morven Hughes Education BookingsBristol Zoo Gardens Clifton, Bristol, BS8 3HA Always nice to get positive feedback.[I’ll upload my locust thoughts when I’ve mapped them out a little better]

Great, Dave. Lovely that the zoo got back to you…could be the start of a great partnership with them. Now THERE’s an idea for a collaborative school project…!
