Art: what’s the price?

March 12, 2011

Having been to the Royal West of England Academy  (RWA) exhibition last weekend, I spotted a nice idea for a handling data starter,
Ask students to estimate the total sale value (asking price) of the wall of pictures shown (up to and including the gymnastics ones).

Then you can find their average guess, range of guesses and represent their estimate graphically.

Given that the total asking price was £9,400 (for the 18 photos) can they decide whether boys or girls were better at estimating the price?

My classes so far have significantly undervalued the art. Depending on your view point, this either means that the art is overpriced or perhaps people don’t generally value art as highly as they should.
