Is symmetry beautiful?

August 15, 2012

Here’s a cool little tool from www.audiotool.com

It’s a lovely little grid (16 by 16) that you can click on the squares and then it creates sounds.
Have a play!

Now then, is symmetry beautiful?

You could try looking at these ones I’ve created. Clicking on the pattern number will take you to the page and you can listen to it.

And by way of contrast:
Pattern_4

Is any of them most beautiful to you?
The tool has been designed so that it’s hard to come up with anything horrid (I think) but are the more structured patterns more pleasing?

What can you come up with? Feel free to paste links to your creations in the comments below.

Will definitely be using it this year, partly because we have a maths and music specialism at our school but mainly because it’s just a very cool question to put to the pupils. I like.
