Big Numbers and Saving Hens

June 1, 2014

I was at the Bath and West show yesterday and noticed this sign.

From listening to More or Less (radio 4 podcast) I know that the correct thing to think about is “is that a big number?”
There are other things I would need to know to be able to put that number into context. For example, how many hens are there in Britain? What is the time period we’re looking at here? And maybe, something to do with how much money this organisation raises each year.
I have little doubt that the British hen welfare trust are doing very good work and this post is not meant to be picking on them specifically. This is a more general point about ‘large’ numbers being quoted without any context.
You can find many examples of this sort of thing from politicians.
